The first named condition affects adult sheep and the second young lambs, both being caused by Clostridium welchii, Type D. Both diseases run an acute course and are highly fatal.
The disease commonly occurs in England, Australia, New Zealand and certain parts of America. Lately, its occurrence has been reported from certain parts of Bombay and Madras. The term ‘Pulpy Kidney’ denotes a condition in which the kidney is so damaged that it decomposes soon after death, Clostridium welchii, Type D, infection in adult sheep usually occurs in those which are in very good condition and over resting is regarded to be a predisposing factor.
The specific toxins liberated by the organisms in the intestines are absorbed very rapidly and death occurs within three to four hours after the onset the disease.
Anti-toxin and whole culture toxoid-vaccine arc very effective for the control of the disease
