Witch Hazel

According to the website Botanical, witch hazel, also known as Hamamelis virginiana, is a shrub that grows in the eastern United States and Canada. Witch hazel, a member of the Hamamelidaceae family, possesses an astringent taste and can reach a height of about 10 to 12 feet. The bark of the shrub is used medicinally to treat numerous health problems, including skin rashes. Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of the book “Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth,” states that witch hazel is an astringent, anti-inflammatory and styptic that can be used topically to treat skin irritations and wounds. Witch hazel contains tannins Tilgner writes, that form a protective coating over your skin lesions and help your skin to heal. Aloe vera, a member of the aloaceae family, has cooling, drying and stimulating tendencies. The leaves of the plant contain a clear, mucilaginous gel used as a topical ointment for numerous skin problems, including rashes. According to Tilgner, the inner mucilaginous part of the plant contains a substance called glucomannan that has anti-inflammatory and anti-itching properties. The gel of the plant is also used to treat burns and wounds. Cayenne

UMMC states that cayenne has been used as both a food and a medicine for about 9,000 years. Cayenne, a member of the nightshade family, has a pungent, sweet and hot taste. The fresh or dry pods of the shrub are used medicinally to treat numerous health problems, especially skin rashes such as psoriasis. Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of the book “The Clinician’s Handbook of Natural Medicine,” states that cayenne reduces scaling, redness, burning, stinging and itching in patients with psoriasis.
