World Fisheries Day observed

Harbour Authority (KFHA) on Wednesday observed World Fisheries Day with a view to speed up efforts for protection of marine life and degrading ecosystem of the sea. The fisher men community organised functions to highlight the key long-standing issues and urged the seafarers to adopt safe techniques to avoid fisheries depletion in the country’s sea and creeks. 

In this regard, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) and KFHA held different programmes. A function was held at fish harbour, MD KFHA Abdul Ghani Jokhio distributed plastic baskets amongst the fishermen of Hora boats free of cost. Each fisherman was given five such baskets. 

The MD also handed over five insulated plastic boxes and 10 plastic crates on subsidised rates to the fishermen of hora boats. “These items will be distributed amongst fishermen of 1,000 Hora boats by the KFHA,” announced Abdul Ghani Jokhio at a simple distribution ceremony. He vowed to facilitate the fishermen and improve the outlook of Karachi fish harbour. 

The Sindh government has approved a development scheme of rehabilitation and renovation of KFH at Rs 555 million costs. Under the scheme 539 large and small boats have already been modified, besides the authority has procured machinery and equipment including stainless steel hand pallet trucks, forklift trucks, insulated plastic boxes, plastic fish crates, plastic baskets to facilitate fishermen for fish handling/transportation. The government scheme is aimed to meet the fisheries requirements according to EU.
