Arif elected unopposed chairman PVMA

Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturer’s Association (PVMA) in its 325th executive committee meeting elected new set of office-bearers, who shall assume their office from October 1 2012. According to an announcement of the PVMA here on Sunday, Khawaja Arif Qasim, a Lahore based leading industrialist, has been elected unopposed as Chairman for the second tenure of the year 2012-13. 

Earlier he has enjoyed this prestigious post in the year 2009-10. Likewise Atif Ikram Sh and Wazir Ali Pardhan have been elected for the slot of Sr. Vice and Vice Chairman respectively. 

In his maiden speech Arif Qasim re-iterated the importance of industrial sector in job creation and provision of vegetable ghee/cooking oil (a staple food item) to masses at affordable price without any interruption. He also spelled out his plans and seek assistance from leading players and in turn was awarded full support from the house. 

The PVMA leads the edible oil sector of Pakistan, whose annual imports of 2.0 million tones exceeds a bill of US $2.4 billion per annum. Likewise the manufacturing sector consumes the edible oil extracted from local an imported oil seeds to the tune of US $1.3 billion. Hence cumulatively the sector’s annual turnover hovers around Rs 500 billion per year. The sector, directly and indirectly, contributes over Rs 120 billion to the national exchequer as well in the shape of duty/taxes and other levies, he added. 

The Annual General Body meeting of the PVMA was attended by leading manufacturers of ghee and cooking oil from all over Pakistan. The forum also discussed the measures to maintain the quality of products and tackle the multifarious problems faced by industry. It was also stressed to take on board the government functionaries in maintaining the quality and ensuring the adulteration to be removed by apprehending unregistered/unscrupulous elements, association added.
