Punjab Agriculture Department has finalised necessary arrangements for the distribution of rust resistant high yielding certified wheat seed varieties for replacement of old and rusted varieties for sustainability of wheat production in the Province. Official sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday that the basic concept of the programme was to promote rust resistant high yielding varieties of wheat for sustainable wheat production under the climate change situation in the country.
Under the programme as many as 95,352 wheat seed bags of 50 KG of certified and rust resistant wheat varieties will be distributed among the farmers in 23838 villages of the Punjab during 2015-16 and under the plan four bags of 50 Kg of certified and rust resistant wheat varieties will be provided to each farmer in the villages of the Province costing Rs 300 million.
Any grower who is self-cultivator, owns land not less than five acres have sources for compatible for growing wheat for seed purpose, ready to adopt departmental recommendations and will not be the family member of any official of Agriculture department can not apply from his village under the scheme. Special training of the selected farmers will be arranged at Markaz level on seed production technology while literature will be provided. In Sialkot district, as many as 5724 bags of Rust free wheat seed will be distributed in 1431 villages during 2015-16 sources revealed.
