Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social ResponsibilityWith time, whole of the world seems to work for the beneficiary of environment, so that sustainable development can be achieved and the future generation can actually make use of the natural resources. Apart from governmental and non – governmental corporations, most of the companies, today, attempt to contribute significantly in saving environment. The manufacturing processes of companies and other traditional business practices are found to have negative impact over both the society and environment. To minimize this negative impact and lead the companies toward sustainable development, CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility has been outlined. Corporate Social Responsibility is actually a form of corporate self – regulation that helps the company to make sure that none of their business practices affect either the society or environment in negative manner. There are different standards and practices integrated within a CSR policy, however the aim of the CSR can be stated as a way to minimize the impact of business operations on environment.

In alignment with the CSR policy, the companies are able to ensure and monitor their significant compliance with the spirit of international norms, ethical standards, and law. The key aim of CSR is to keep the companies aware of their responsibilities toward both the society and environment so that each of the employees within the company is encouraged and motivated to work for the beneficiary of society and environment, rather than negatively affecting the environment. In support of the positive aim and objectives of CSR policy, many of the organizational leaders and executives argue that through complying with CSR, the companies not only help in saving the environment and add to the sustainable development of humankind, but also enhance the level of long term profits. Thus, CSR can be perceived as a policy that aid the mission of an organization and guide the employees to work for the beneficiary of environment and society.

The need of CSR is clearly evident from the extent to which the companies have been negatively affecting the environment. The manufacturing plants of several production companies dump large amounts of garbage, thus leading to soil pollution. The companies that burn fossil fuel for production and other activities enhance the level of greenhouse gases’ emission, thus leading to air pollution. It is a well – known fact that many companies pollute rivers and seas through dumping polluted water without adequate treatment of the same, thus leading to water pollution. Apart from water, air, and land or soil pollution, the companies negatively affect the environment and the society in numerous ways, including offering low quality products, cutting tress for production processes, unnecessary use of electricity. Thus, it is highly important that if not the organizational leaders, each of the employees must be well aware of the organizational practices that negatively affect the environment. Through being aware of these practices, the employees, being the base of every organization, can suggest their managers to comply with the CSR and attempt to minimize the negative impact of their company on environment.

There are various ways through which CSR can help the companies to minimize the negative impact of companies on environment. Firstly, the companies must try to consume as much electricity and water that is required. There have been various cases where the office lights are not switched off and water taps in the washrooms are left running. Thus, through just clicking a switch and turning the tap off, the companies can contribute to the beneficiary of environment. Secondly, the paper, which is usually wasted, must be adequately used. In today’s modern world, the use of paper is actually unjustifiable, but still the people use it for some small reasons, like rough work, leisure time doodles, calculation, and some other similar work. Through minimizing the supply of paper to employees and minimizing the use of the same, the number of trees that are cut every second just to make paper will reduce. One of the common mistake that employees do is forgetting to turn off the computers and other electrical devices, just to go back home early. It is shocking to note that the electricity consumed by a computer overnight is actually equivalent to printing around eight hundred A4 – sized papers. These steps are easy to perform and yet highly effective. Each of these are a fraction of CSR policy and must be complied with.

Apart from employees, it is also the responsibility of the organizational leaders and executives to monitor the acts of each of the employees. Forming a CSR policy is just half duty done, as the same must be strictly implemented, so that the key aim and objective associated with Corporate Social Responsibility can be achieved. Through making the CSR guidelines as the wallpaper of employees’ computers, pasting the poster of CSR guidelines in different walls of the offices, and providing the employees with adequate training on CSR, the organizational leaders can efficiently contribute to the saving of environment. The best part of CSR is that it not only aims at saving the environment from company’s end, but it also covers the responsibility of company’s different group of stakeholders towards environment. The different stakeholders of company, including employees, investors, customers, and shareholders, must also work in alignment with the different standards and policies of CSR, so that the humankind can develop in a sustainable manner.

Although CSR is critiqued to be disadvantageous for companies itself, there are certain advantages that can be attained by different companies through complying with CSR. With time the people have started to shift towards only those companies that not only offer them with quality and affordable products, but also work for the beneficiary of environment, and it is clear there is no better way to work for the beneficiary of environment that complying with CSR. Thus, the argument that CSR must be spread and complied with all across the globe becomes stronger. CSR must not be seen as an disadvantage for companies, but must be perceived as a strategy to work for environment, while gaining maximal profits and strong base of customers.
