Brazil to Encourage Cage-Free Egg Production

BRAZIL – Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) will soon begin working with the poultry industry to encourage cage-free or enriched cage egg production.

MAPA’s Coordinator of the Animal Welfare Commission, Lizie Buss, travelled to Scotland recently to learn about the egg production systems in use in Europe.

In a statement, Ms Buss described the techniques in use in Europe, including the use of perches, nest boxes and scratching pads, adding that the free range production system is used to encourage natural behaviour in hens.

“In Europe, the use of battery cages is no longer allowed and beak trimming with a hot blade is also prohibited in most countries,” Ms Buss said.
