Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service
The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is part of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
AQIS manages quarantine controls at our borders to minimise the risk of exotic pests and diseases entering the country. AQIS also provides import and export inspection and certification to help retain Australia's highly favourable animal, plant and human health status and wide access to overseas export markets.
Australia is free from a number of biological threats, such as foot and mouth disease, that have had major economic and environmental consequences for other countries.
As international travel has become easier, the job of keeping Australia free of unwanted pests has become more demanding. AQIS continuously looks to improve the effectiveness of the quarantine effort by working closely with other areas within DAFF to manage Australia's biosecurity system. We also work closely with other Australian Government agencies—such as Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Department of Health and Ageing, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) and state/territory governments—to support their management of post-border detections and incursions of quarantine pests and diseases, and to support our own verification and certification activities for agriculture and food products. |

South Sudan agriculture
South Sudan has a vast natural resource base and huge agricultural potential, with more than 90% of the land being suitable for farming.
However, the 20-year civil war that affected South Sudan has had a devastating effect. Much of the south of the country has been left in ruins, with little discernible infrastructure and a lack of social services like education and healthcare. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that up to eight million people were displaced from their homes, and they are gradually returning with few possessions and prospects. Aerial raids and ground attacks meant that those who stayed were unable to work in the fields and reluctant to invest in their farms.
FARM-Africa is providing people returning to the area with the support and investment they need to farm the land effectively. |

Agriculture in Egypt
Today the entire modern world is aware that our food supply cannot meet the demands of the world population. How can that be possible? In our high tech world, we can fix every technology, visit Mars, and cure diseases. Why can’t we feed the people of the world ? The answer lies in modern agricultural development.
In “Egypt’s Future Depends on Agriculture and Wisdom” I describe the history and present day efforts and limitations of agricultural development in Egypt as an example of the history and results in most developing ( third world ) countries. |
